Antimony(v) oxide is a chemical compound with the formula Sb2O3. It is a light-yellow crystalline solid that has an antiseptic effect and is used in the manufacture of paints, rubber, and ceramics. Antimony(v) oxide has been shown to be effective against some bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, but not against Staphylococcus aureus or Bacillus subtilis. It reacts with water vapor to form hydrated antimony pentoxide (Sb2O5). Inorganic acids react with antimony(v) oxide to produce hydrogen fluoride gas and inorganic acid. Hydrolysis of fatty acids by enzymes produces fatty acid anhydrides and hydrogen ions.
