Almotriptan is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins. It is used to treat migraine headaches. Almotriptan has been shown to be effective in patients with chronic daily headache and migraine without aura. The drug should not be taken by people who are allergic to it or other selective serotonin receptor agonists. Almotriptan should not be taken within 24 hours before or after taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, including MAOIs such as phenelzine sulfate, tranylcypromine sulfate, selegiline hydrochloride, and isocarboxazid sodium. Almotriptan can cause drowsiness and dizziness and may impair mental alertness. Certain medications may increase the risk of side effects from almotriptan (e.g., anhydrous sodium).
