Anilazine is a chemical compound that belongs to the family of aryl halides, which are compounds with a carbon-halogen bond. It has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial cytochrome and thus affects bacterial growth. Anilazine is used for the control of plant diseases caused by bacteria and fungi, as well as in serological tests for the detection of antibodies against bacterial antigens. The chlorine atom in anilazine binds to copper ions, forming a copper complex. This complex reacts with nutrient solutions containing either ammonium or nitrate ions and disrupts their metabolism, leading to cell death. Anilazine also has synergic effects when combined with piperonyl butoxide. It is possible that these synergistic effects are due to the inhibition of chemical reactions involving electron transfer within the cytochrome system, as well as its ability to inhibit ionization techniques such as chemical ionization and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
