(S)-2-Acetoxy-propionic acid has been found in the mandibular glands of these bees and is believed to play a role in their behavior. This chemical can be synthesized from propionic acid and acetaldehyde or from lactic acid and acetaldehyde. It is also possible to produce it from 2-bromopropanoic acid through the tripropionate pathway.
