Amastatin HCl is an inhibitor of the enzyme aspartyl protease, which is involved in the degradation of proteins. It has been used to study the uptake and distribution of this molecule in rat cardiomyocytes. Amastatin HCl also inhibits uptake by monoclonal antibodies directed against the glutamate receptor. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi, including Candida albicans, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus. Amastatin HCl may be useful for the treatment of enkephalins or morphological changes in cells caused by glutamate.
