Aminomethanesulfonic acid is a strong inorganic acid with a pK a of 2.95. It is the conjugate base of methansulfonic acid and has a redox potential of -1.84 volts (versus ferrocenium/ferrocene). Aminomethanesulfonic acid exists as sodium salts, which are soluble in water and have a pH of about 1. Aminomethanesulfonic acid has been used to lyse cells for biological samples, such as blood serum, to remove cellular components that interfere with enzyme activity measurements. This chemical also reacts with hydroxyl groups in proteins and peptides, producing sulfinic acids and sulfonates that can be measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
