It is an inhibitor of the enzyme tyrosinase, which participates in the oxidation of dopamine to DOPA and subsequent conversion to melanin. 2-Amino-4,8-naphthalenedisulfonic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of probiotic bacteria and can be used as a food additive. The compound also inhibits the oxidation catalyst that is required for some analytical chemistry tests. 2-Amino-4,8-naphthalenedisulfonic acid has been shown to have toxicological properties in animal studies and this toxicity is exacerbated by its ability to bind with pyridine nucleotides found in cells. The toxicological effects are thought to be related to the inhibition of protein synthesis that leads to cell death.
