N-alpha-Acetyl-L-tryptophan methyl ester is an inhibitor of electron transport. It inhibits the oxidation of NADH to NAD+ by binding to the flavin cofactor at the Q site of complex I in mammalian mitochondria. This inhibition is reversible and competitive with other substrates for this site. N-alpha-Acetyl-L-tryptophan methyl ester has been shown to have a weak but significant inhibitory effect on proton transport by complex I, leading to decreased ATP production. In addition, it was found that N-alpha-Acetyl-L-tryptophan methyl ester can enhance macrophage cell activity in model systems. The carbonyl group in this compound is responsible for these effects as well as its ability to bind hydroxyl groups and hydrogen fluoride. N-alpha-Acetyl-L-tryptophan methyl ester also binds strongly to fatty acids and fatty acid
