4-Aminomethylindole is an indole carboxylic acid that has antiviral effects. It is a sialic acid and can be found in saliva and pancreatic secretions. 4-Aminomethylindole has been shown to inhibit the growth of influenza A virus in cells grown in culture. This may be due to its ability to act as a nucleophile, attacking the viral RNA strand by protonation. 4-Aminomethylindole also reacts with silicon to form isoindolines, which are compounds that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.
