Hyoscyamine is a plant alkaloid that is used as an antispasmodic, an anti-cholinergic agent, and an anticholinergic drug. It also has anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties. Hyoscyamine can be found in the tissue of plants such as Hyoscyamus niger (henbane), as well as in the roots of plants such as Scopolia carniolica (Scopolia). It can be extracted from these tissues by using high performance liquid chromatography methods. The major impurities are atropine sulfate, 6-hydroxyhyoscyamine, and hyoscine hydrobromide. A monoclonal antibody was developed to identify the presence of this compound in biological samples. This antibody can also be used to determine if a certain strain of bacteria is resistant to this drug.
