This binding inhibits the interaction of cortisol with this receptor, preventing the activation of transcriptional responses that regulate gene expression. 9-Acetylphenanthrene also relaxes smooth muscle cells, which may be due to inhibition of calcium ion release from intracellular stores in response to acetylcholine.
