It also binds to the same receptor as acetaminophen, but with a lower affinity. The binding affinity of 3-acetaminophenol for the receptor may be responsible for the analgesic effect observed at low doses, while higher doses inhibit the enzyme activity of hepatic microsomes. 3-acetaminophenol has been shown to cause toxicity in rats and mice at high doses, but not at low doses.
