Tetrabutan-2-yl silicate is a stabilizer that is used in the encapsulation of drugs. It is an aerobic material and can be used as a slow release drug delivery system. Tetrabutan-2-yl silicate has been shown to be an effective inhibitor for methanogenesis and to inhibit the uptake of aliphatic hydrocarbons by bacteria. This material may also be useful for treating bacterial infections due to its ability to bind chloride ions, which are required for cell wall synthesis. The high density of tetrabutan-2-yl silicate makes it more difficult for bacteria to penetrate the coating, making it less susceptible to degradation at higher temperatures.
