2,2,4-Trimethylpentan-3-ol is an alcohol that is a constituent of many essential oils and has a very low odor. It is used in the production of plasticizers, surfactants, solvents, and other industrial products. 2,2,4-Trimethylpentan-3-ol can be produced by reacting isobutyraldehyde with methanol and sulfuric acid. The reaction time required for the formation of 2,2,4-trimethylpentan-3-ol depends on the concentration of reactants used. This chemical has three hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its acidic properties. 2,2,4-Trimethylpentan-3-ol will react with carbon tetrachloride to produce a mixture of chloroform and methylene chloride at room temperature over a period of about 24 hours.
