Beschreibung

Safrole is a naturally occurring aromatic compound found in plants such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and basil. Safrole has been detected in the human diet at levels of 0.1-0.2 mg/kg. It can be metabolized to estragole, which is also present in the human diet at levels of 1-2 μg/kg. Safrole induces detectable activity in CD-1 mice after oral administration. Safrole has been shown to have mutagenic effects on humans and increases the incidence of cancer in CD-1 mice when given by gavage at doses of 0.4 or 4 mg/kg body weight per day for two years. Safrole has also been shown to induce DNA adducts in rodents that are carcinogenic when injected into their skin or gavaged at doses of 2 or 20 mg/kg per day for two years.
