Beschreibung:4,5-Dichloro-2-methylbenzoic acid is a colorless crystalline solid. It is soluble in water and hydrochloric acid but insoluble in ethanol. The compound can be acetylated by chloroacetyl chloride to form 4,5-dichloro-2-methylbenzoic acid ethyl ester. The yield of this reaction is high and the product crystallizes readily from water. This reagent can be used for the synthesis of 2-alkylthiophenes with alkali metal hydroxides or metal salts as well as for the preparation of 2,4,5-trichlorobenzoic acid with hypoiodite or acetyl chloride. 4,5-Dichloro-2-methylbenzoic acid can also be used as a starting material for the production of dyes and drugs.
