It also possesses antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium that commonly causes infections in wounds. 4NP is not active against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The inhibitory concentrations of 4NP have been found to be between 0.5 and 1 mM for Gram-positive bacteria, while they are between 10 and 100 mM for Gram-negative bacteria.
