4-(2-Nitrophenyl)morpholine (4NP) is a pharmacological agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria and has an effect on the inflammatory response. 4NP has been shown to inhibit the production of prostaglandins, which are important mediators in inflammation and pain. It also possesses antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium that commonly causes infections in wounds. 4NP is not active against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The inhibitory concentrations of 4NP have been found to be between 0.5 and 1 mM for Gram-positive bacteria, while they are between 10 and 100 mM for Gram-negative bacteria.
