It is an absorber that can be used as a conditioning agent in textile dyeing and other applications. Sodium 1,2-ethanedisulfonate is also used in the production of quinoline derivatives for use as anti-inflammatory agents. This compound has also been shown to be effective against influenza virus strains H5N1 and H7N9.
