Sodium 5-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulphonate is a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) hydrolase that hydrolyzes the lipid A component of LPS. It can be used to treat septicemia and hemocyte activation, which is caused by gram-negative bacterial infection. Sodium 5-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulphonate is also used in the diagnosis of fungal infections. It reacts with LPS on the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria to produce a colored reaction. The colorimetric assay can be read at 540 nm, which corresponds to the absorbance maximum for sodium 5-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulphonate.
