Beschreibung

Promethazine is a phenothiazine derivative that is used as an antihistamine and antipsychotic. It has been found to bind to the H1 receptor, which may be the mechanism by which it inhibits histamine release. Promethazine also binds to the H2 receptor, which may be the mechanism by which it inhibits acid secretion in the stomach. Promethazine has been shown to have antiviral properties against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Promethazine can bind to metal ions and form a neutral complex that can inhibit receptors on cells. The drug has been shown to inhibit receptors for acetylcholine, dopamine, GABA, serotonin, histamine, and norepinephrine.
