1-Benzyl-4-nitro-1H-pyrazole is a nitrate that is catalyzed by benzyl alcohol to form 1-(benzyloxy)-2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. The nucleophilic aryl bromides react with the arene to form the desired products. This reaction can be used to synthesize nitroimidazoles and iodopyrazoles. The reaction requires sulfuric acid as a catalyst and oleum as an oxidant. Nitration of the aromatic ring can occur when heating in the presence of nitric acid.
