4-Bromomethylphenylboronic acid is a peroxide that is used as a probe in biological research. It reacts with cytosolic proteins and produces an intense fluorescent signal when bound to the cb2 cannabinoid receptor. This probe has been used for the determination of hydrogen peroxide levels in biological samples, such as blood cells, and for the detection of peroxides in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) samples. The reaction mechanism of 4-bromomethylphenylboronic acid with hydrogen peroxide is believed to be initiated by the formation of an intermediate radical that can react with other molecules or react with oxygen to produce more radicals. These reactions are responsible for producing reactive oxygen species, which are damaging to cells.
