1-Bromo-4-methoxynaphthalene is a naphthalene derivative that has been used to study the reactions of nucleophilic substitution. This reaction involves the cleavage of one or more bonds in a molecule, with the addition of a nucleophile (a chemical species that donates electrons). 1-Bromo-4-methoxynaphthalene reacts primarily with anions, but also with halides and ammonium nitrate. The mechanism for this reaction is not well understood, but it is thought to involve electron transfer from the nucleophile to the electrophilic carbon atom. 1-Bromo-4-methoxynaphthalene has also been shown to exhibit fluorescence lifetimes.
