It is used as a catalyst in the production of polymers, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, which are used to produce plastics. BPCZrCl2 has been shown to be capable of producing cyclopentadiene and methylcyclopentadiene as reaction products. These compounds have been found to be labile, so they can be easily removed from the polymerization process. BPCZrCl2 is also a cocatalyst with high reactivity and stability. This property allows it to be used in reactions that involve multiple nuclear species, such as the termination of olefinic chains by metallocenes.
