8-Bromo-4-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (8BrHQ) is a molecule that inhibits the HIV virus by acting as an inhibitor. 8BrHQ binds to the protein envelope of HIV and prevents it from attaching to a host's cells. It also inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is needed for viral replication. This drug has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity in human cells and is effective against both wild type and drug resistant strains of HIV. 8BrHQ also has applications in treating obesity, as it modulates the body mass index of mice with high fat diets. 8BrHQ is a non-nucleoside inhibitor that binds to RNA polymerase II near the catalytic site, inhibiting transcription elongation.
