2-Biphenyl-4-yl-piperazine (BPZ) is an all-trans retinoic acid analog. It is a substrate for the enzyme activities of retinol dehydrogenase, retinyl ester hydrolase, and retinyl ester synthase. BPZ has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and to promote differentiation in these cells. BPZ also has been shown to be effective against a mutant strain of P388D1 cells that are resistant to cisplatin, with a potency similar to cisplatin. In addition, BPZ has been shown to protect against chronic kidney disease in rats by preventing the accumulation of cholesterol esters and malondialdehyde, which are products of lipid peroxidation. BPZ also has been shown to have hepatoprotective properties. It has been shown to lower blood pressure in rats and increase serum alanine aminotransfer
