• Beschreibung: Sec-butyl ether is a reactive liquid that is used in the synthesis of phosphotungstic acid. It is formed by the reaction of sec-butyl alcohol with phosphorus pentoxide. The reactants are heated to 170°C and allowed to react for 1 hour. The product is purified by distillation and then reacted with phthalic anhydride in the presence of a base catalyst, such as triethylamine, to form a telechelic acid chloride. In order to synthesize the hydrated form, sec-butyl ether must be combined with water and heated at a temperature below boiling point. This process is called hydration. Acids can be used as catalysts in this reaction because they break down into hydrogen ions (H+) when they are dissolved in water or other polar solvents.
