3-Bromo-4-chloronitrobenzene is a bacteriostatic agent that belongs to the class of antimicrobial agents. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human pathogens, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, in vitro. 3-Bromo-4-chloronitrobenzene has been found in urine samples after administration of lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil. This compound also inhibits the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is an opportunistic pathogen that can infect humans and cause serious infections. The antibacterial activity of 3-bromo-4-chloronitrobenzene may be related to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis by binding to the enzyme enoyl CoA hydratase.
