1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate is a cationic surfactant that has been shown to be an effective fluorescence probe for polymer films. It exhibits a frequency shift in the fluorescence spectrum, which is proportional to the surface concentration of the polymer film. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate can be used as a titration calorimetry to determine the amount of polymers on the surface of polymer films. It also has electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and thermal expansion properties, which can be used to investigate its transport properties and chemical reactions with other molecules. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate is soluble in water and organic solvents, but insoluble in hydrocarbons. It undergoes hydrophobic interactions with chloride ions at high concentrations.
