Alpha-bromostyrene is a reactive chemical intermediate used in the synthesis of alpha-methylstyrene. It can be obtained by reacting 2-bromostyrene with hydrogen chloride in the presence of palladium and an organic solution such as tetrahydrofuran. The cross-coupling reaction mechanism is believed to involve generation of a reactive carbonium ion that reacts with the bromide to form an aryl chloride intermediate, which can then react with amines or other electrophiles to generate products.
