Bis(methylthio)methylene meldrums acid (BMTMA) is a compound that has been shown to be active against many bacteria and fungi. It is a member of the class of compounds known as alkenyl sulfides, which are characterized by their molecularly linear structure and high stability. BMTMA has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Fusarium oxysporum. BMTMA binds to the pyran ring of the enzyme DNA gyrase and inhibits its function. BMTMAs ability to bind to both bacterial and fungal cells is due in part to its ability to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds with the amide groups on proteins. These interactions lead to inhibition of protein synthesis in bacterial cells and disruption of cell membranes in both bacterial and fungal cells. Irradiation with UV light increases the antimicrobial activity of BMTMAs against these
