Baccatin VI is a synthetic analog of paclitaxel. It has been shown to have similar anti-cancer activity as paclitaxel, but its toxicity profile is less severe. Baccatin VI binds to the cell membrane and disrupts the lipid bilayer, leading to an increase in permeability and leakage of ions. This leads to an imbalance in the cellular homeostasis and apoptosis. The compound also inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to topoisomerase II, causing a halt in the progression of mitosis. Baccatin VI has been shown to be effective against colorectal carcinoma cells in vitro and can be used for the treatment of this type of cancer.
