Beschreibung

Benzthiazide is a drug that inhibits the enzyme cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, which regulates the production of cAMP and cGMP. It has potent anticancer effects and is used to treat high blood pressure. Benzthiazide binds to the active site of the phosphodiesterase enzyme, preventing it from inactivating cyclic nucleotides. This increases levels of cAMP and cGMP, which prolongs relaxation of vascular smooth muscle cells, thereby reducing blood pressure. Benzthiazide also slows down the rate of glomerular filtration by decreasing sodium reabsorption in the nephron. It can cause adverse effects such as edema, hypotension, and an increased risk for congestive heart failure if not taken with other drugs to counteract these side effects.
