Beschreibung

Bis(ethylthio)methane is a colorless liquid with an ether-like odor. It is soluble in water and acid solutions, but not in alkali or gaseous media. It boils at -35°C and can be distilled under reduced pressure to give purer samples. The compound is thermodynamically stable, but decomposes on prolonged exposure to air or light. Bis(ethylthio)methane has the structural formula CH3CH2-S-CH3 and consists of two ethyl groups bound to a sulfur atom via single bonds, with a methyl group bound to one of the ethyls via a double bond. The molecule also contains two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to the sulfur atom, three hydroxymethyl groups (one attached to each ethyl group), two sulfurs, and one halide.
