It is a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial membrane depolarization and has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in vivo. 2-Bromo-4,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid also induces cell death by demethylation and hydroxylation of DNA, leading to apoptosis. This compound is synthesized by reacting 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid with bromine and potassium hydroxide. Surrogates such as amides are used for this synthesis because the original product is not stable enough. Protocatechuic acid can be produced from 2-bromo-4,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid through hydrolysis.
