Bromodichloronitromethane (BDN) is a chemical that has high cytotoxicity. It is used in analytical chemistry for the determination of hydrated and other inorganic acids. It is also used as an insecticide and agricultural herbicide. BDN has been shown to be harmful to mammalian cells, causing health effects such as death, necrosis, and chromosomal aberrations. BDN has been shown to react with glutathione transferase enzymes found in ovaries and other tissues, leading to a reaction rate that can be measured by spectroscopy at 275 nm. The synthesis of BDN involves reacting trichloronitromethane with bromine and sodium nitrite at 300°C.
