Bixin is a carotenoid pigment that belongs to the group of natural products. It has been found to be a potent inducer of CYP3A4, CYP2C9 and CYP1A2, which are enzymes in the cytochrome P450 system. Bixin also has been shown to have pharmacological effects on cultured human cells. The fluorescence probe bixin-diphenyl was used to measure the concentration of bixin in human serum. This method showed that concentrations of bixin in serum were higher than those of other carotenoids, such as lycopene and β-carotene, suggesting that it may be a potential biomarker for atherosclerosis. This property has been confirmed by an experimental model and a model system.
