Beschreibung

Bromethalin is a toxic chemical that causes death by asphyxiation. It is used to control rodents and other pests, but can cause ecological effects if not properly controlled. Bromethalin is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which leads to paralysis and death by respiratory failure. It has been shown to be effective against bacterial strains including Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli; however, it has no effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. Bromethalin may be used in the diagnosis of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, such as brucellosis and tularemia, but the clinical relevance of this compound remains unclear. Bromethalin has also been shown to have a specific antidote, which could be useful for treatment of accidental exposure or overdose in humans.
