2-Butyl-5-methylthiophene is a benzothiophene that has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the enzyme sulfide oxidase. The compound also has low molecular weight, which may make it more suitable for use as a pharmaceutical drug. 2-Butyl-5-methylthiophene is used in the synthesis of other compounds, such as 2-butylbenzothiazole and 1,4-dibromobenzene. In addition, it is used in photometric studies as well as a sulfide probe for gas chromatography. The yield of this compound is dependent on the reaction rate and can vary from 53% to 98%. This product has not been found to exist in nature and can only be synthesized in laboratory conditions.
