Benzyltrimethylammonium chloride is an organic compound that is a cationic surfactant. It is prepared by the reaction of benzyl chloride with trimethylamine and hydroxide, and has been used in the preparation of biological samples for electron microscopy. It is also used as a surfactant in sample preparation for Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Benzyltrimethylammonium chloride has shown to have low toxicity in toxicity studies with rats, although it does have some potential for skin irritation. This compound has been shown to be safe for use in water vapor at up to 1 ppm and glycol ethers at up to 2 ppm. Studies have shown that this compound can increase the glomerular filtration rate and decrease blood pressure, but may interfere with the intramolecular hydrogen bonding of proteins.
