1-Benzyl-4-cyano-4-phenylpiperidine HCl is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of piperidine derivatives. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to meperidine, its active form. 1-Benzyl-4-cyano-4-phenylpiperidine HCl has antihistaminic and thionyl properties, which may be due to its inhibition of histamine release. This drug also has a blood pressure lowering effect, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the conversion of angiotensinogen into angiotensin I by the action of renin. 1-Benzyl-4-cyano-4-phenylpiperidine HCl can also act as a hydrogen sulfate donor or acceptor, depending on pH.
