The binding of benzyl glycinate hydrochloride to the ns3 protease prevents the conversion of amide-containing prodrugs into active form. The ester hydrochloride moiety in this molecule may act as a competitive inhibitor against carboxylesterases found in erythrocytes, which are responsible for the hydrolysis of oxytocin. Benzyl glycinate hydrochloride also binds to the oxytocin receptor and may be used as an oxytocin mimetic.
