The formyl group on 5BDPA can be transferred from one site to another by nucleophilic attack by a hydroxyl or amino group on the carbon atom adjacent to the leaving group. This transfer mechanism is used to attach 5BDPA molecules together into larger structures. 5BDPA has been shown to bind human proteins such as αIIb β3 integrin
