The solution can be hydrogenated to form the corresponding saturated hydrocarbons. The reaction mechanism is initiated by thermal oxidation of ethylene diamine or by the addition of a chemical oxidation catalyst, such as osmium tetroxide. In these reactions, the hydroxyl group on the p-benzoquinonedioxime is replaced by an alkene group.
