Boc-D-glutamic acid alpha-methyl ester is a biomolecule that has been synthesised for the treatment of microcystins. Boc-D-glutamic acid alpha-methyl ester binds to microcystins by covalent modification and competitively inhibits the binding of the toxin to receptor sites in mammalian cells. This affinity was shown using immunoassays and β-amino acid modifications. Monoclonal antibodies can be produced against this molecule, which can then be used as probes for biochips to detect microcystin levels in water samples.
