5-Bromopyrazine-2-carbonitrile is a structural analog of the amide inhibitor bace1, which is currently in preclinical development. This compound has been shown to have potent activity against Alzheimer's disease, with no significant toxicity. 5-Bromopyrazine-2-carbonitrile binds to the amyloid precursor protein and inhibits its cleavage by the enzyme BACE1, which leads to reduced production of amyloid beta peptides. In addition, this compound has been shown to inhibit the activity of BACE1 at low concentrations as well as other enzymes involved in amyloid beta production.
