2-Benzothiazolylthio)acetic acid (2BTA) is a cytostatic agent that inhibits protein synthesis. It binds to the ribosomes and prevents the formation of polypeptide chains, thereby inhibiting translation. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro at concentrations of 8 μM when combined with other antituberculosis drugs such as isoniazid, rifampin, and pyrazinamide. 2BTA has also shown bactericidal activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in animal models. 2BTA is not active against non-tuberculous mycobacteria or other bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, or Escherichia coli. 2BTA can be used to prevent bacterial conjugation by methylating DNA bases during replication and transcription. The discovery of this compound was made possible by its fluorescent properties;
