It has been shown to be toxic to bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells. The toxicity of bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as phospholipase A2, lipoxygenase, and cyclooxygenase. Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate also has a carcinogenic potential for humans and other mammals. This compound can cause matrix effects in some studies, which may limit its usefulness as an analytical reagent.
