- 2-(Bromomethyl)-1,4-benzodioxane
2-Bromomethyl-1,4-benzodioxane is a heterocyclic compound with the chemical formula CHBrNO. It is used as a precursor to other heterocycles such as 2-bromoindole. 2-Bromomethyl-1,4-benzodioxane can be synthesized by reacting benzene with methanol and bromine in supercritical carbon dioxide at room temperature. This reaction takes about 10 minutes to complete and produces a yield of about 75%. The desired product can be obtained from the reaction mixture by treating it with an acid such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The product can also be purified by recrystallization from acetonitrile or tetrahydrofuran. For example, you could use acetonitrile to avoid the formation of crystals that contain water molecules.
